Course Reserves

Faculty members may set aside books, photocopied articles, and videos for the use of their students during the semester. Reserve items may be designated for 3 hour, 1 day, or 3 day checkout.

Use the Course Reserves Request Form or call Melissa Verble at ext. 4018 to place an item on reserve.

Reserve items are taken off reserve at the end of each semester and returned to the faculty member.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How Does It Work?
  • Any instructor may have course-related books, articles, videos and other materials made available in the library for short-term use through the Course Reserve system.
  • Materials are checked out to students for a checkout period designated by the instructor: 3-hour, 1-day, or 3-day.
  • Because we have limited space at this time, please use the reserve system only for materials which will actually be assigned to students.

What Materials Can I Put on Reserve?
  • CBU library books
  • Personal copies
  • Single chapters of a book
  • Photocopies of journal articles (up to 2 from any one issue)
  • Photocopies of newspaper articles
  • Test files, lecture notes, solutions files as created by the instructor
  • Coursepacks

What Materials May Not Put on Reserve?
  • Any item belonging to another library or that is obtained through interlibrary loan.
  • Rented videos or any materials not owned by the library or the personal property of the instructor.
  • Standardized tests, workbooks, answer sheets, or other commercial products of a similar nature.
  • Student papers not accompanied by written permission from the author
  • Any materials that do not conform to copyright laws (Title 17, U.S. Code)

How Do I Submit Reserves Requests?
  • Please use the online Course Reserves Request Form, or provide us with a printout of the form. All materials should be accompanied by a complete bibliographic citation.
Please identify items in the same manner as in your syllabus.
  • Allow three non-weekend days for library staff to process materials submitted to reserve BEFORE assigning these materials to students.
  • In order to ensure that material is equally available to all students, do not assign library-owned materials prior to notifying the library of the need for course reserve status.
  • No more than three copies of a copyrighted article may be placed on reserve. You are responsible for your own photocopying.
  • All materials, including personal copies, will have labels and barcodes attached during library processing. The library attempts to guard against theft by placing security strips on all reserve books and videos; however, the library is not responsible for theft of or damage to personal copies.
  • All materials will be removed from reserve on the last day of the exam period, unless a written request to leave them on reserve is received prior to that date. This is due to limited space and copyright restrictions.

What Do I Need to Know About Copyright?
  • Amount of photocopied material should be reasonable with respect to total amount of material assigned for one term of a course--taking into account the nature of the course, its subject matter and level.
  • Number of copies should be reasonable in light of number of students enrolled, difficulty and timing of assignments, and other courses which may assign the same material.
  • Material should contain some form of copyright notice (which will be provided by the library during processing).
  • The effect of photocopying the material should not be detrimental to the market for that work.
  • Responsibility for compliance with U.S. copyright laws in regards to photocopied reserve materials rests with the instructor.
  • The library reserves the right to refuse to place on reserve any materials which we believe may violate the fair use principles of copyright law.
