Formal Education:  Ms. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois with a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Chemistry.  She received a Master of Science degree from Memphis State University where she studied chemosensory detection of predators by pit vipers.  She spent several years working toward a Ph.D. in which she studied snakes of the genus Lampropeltis (kingsnakes and milksnakes) by sequencing mitochondrial DNA to determine their taxonomic status.

Background:  Ms. Miller grew up in Southern Illinois in a small town called Metropolis.  This small city is situated on the Ohio River as well as being on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest.  Living in this rural setting gave her many opportunities to enjoy nature by spending time walking in the woods and also being out on the water of the Ohio River either in a small sailboat with her dad or in a fishing boat with her grandfather.

Interests:  Since the age of 14, Ms. Miller knew she wanted to study biology.  Beginning in high school under the direction of an exceptional biology teacher, her study of the subject continues to this day.  It is not unusual for her to spend part of her summer taking field courses at a biological field station in Maine.  In addition to her studies, she enjoys camping and traveling to state and national parks.  She also enjoys playing volleyball and serves as a high school volleyball referee for the state of Tennessee.
