Br. Walter Schreiner (home page)
Title: Associate Professor of Mathematics, Length of service at CBU: Br. Walter has been teaching at CBU since 1998. Courses being taught this fall: Math 105 Finite Math; Math 232 Calculus III; Math 329 Applied Numerical Analysis. Other courses recently taught: Math 117 Precalculus; Math 131 Calculus I; Math 132 Calculus II; Math 151 Numerical Concepts for Elementary Teachers; Math 152 Math Topics for Elementary Teachers; Math 201 Applied Statistics; Math 231 Differential Equations; Math 308 Statistics; Math 402 Abstract Algebra; and Math 414 Real Analysis. Formal Education: Brother Walter received a BA in Mathematics (with a strong concentration in Psychology) in 1968 and an MAT in Education in 1969 from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He then earned an MS in Mathematics from Notre Dame in 1973 and studied Educational Administration at the University of Minnesota in 1977-78. Then in 1989 Brother Walter began graduate studies in Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning a Ph.D. in 1995 (Matrix Regular Orders on Operator Spaces), with the last six months of graduate study spent at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. Background: Brother Walter grew up in West St. Paul, Minnesota. After joining the Christian Brothers, he spent 21 years in high school work in the Twin Cities area: two at Grace High School, fifteen at Cretin High School, and four at DeLaSalle High School. During that time, Brother Walter was a mathematics and computer science teacher, a soccer and baseball coach, an athletic director for 7 years, and an Academic Vice Principal for 9 years. One former student and player was Paul Molitor, now in the Baseball Hall of Fame; another was Steve Walsh, who led the Miami Hurricanes to a national chasmpionship at quaterback and then played for about a decade in the NFL. Following the reception of his Ph.D., Brother Walter taught Mathematics for three years at St. Mary's University of Minnesota before coming to CBU. Interests: Beyond enjoying his work in Mathematics and Campus Ministry with the CBU students, Brother Walter enjoys supporting the CBU students in their various activities. He has always enjoyed athletics, classical music, and reading, and can often be seen reading during the lulls in the various games on campus. | ||||
