The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems (MIS) is designed to provide graduates with the necessary skill sets in information systems project management, database management, networks, and web development to join the workforce in the various lucrative fields of information technology (IT). Coursework focuses on topics such as networks and security, systems design and analysis, database design and data mining, web applications and development, and project management.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, five out of the ten fastest growing professions in 2004-2014 are in IT/MIS. The growth rate of all professional level IT/MIS positions over the next ten years is predicted to be at 30.5% compared to 13% for all occupations.
The question of how and when companies and organizations use information technology is critical to their remaining competitive in today’s global and fast paced economy. MIS managers and staff play a vital role in the technological direction of their organizations. They do everything from helping to construct the business plan, to adminstering network security, to delivering and managing Internet operations.
MIS employees plan, coordinate and direct research, and facilitate the information and/or computer-related activities of firms. They help determine both technical and business goals in consultation with top management and make detailed plans for the accomplishment of these goals. For example, they may develop the overall concepts and requirements of a new product or service, or may identify how an organization's computing capabilities can provide it with a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
MIS managers plan and coordinate activities such as installation and upgrading of hardware and software, programming and systems design, design and operation of databases, development of computer networks, and implementation of Internet and intranet sites. They are increasingly involved with the upkeep, maintenance, and security of networks. They analyze the computer and information needs of their organizations from an operational and strategic perspective and determine immediate and long-range personnel and equipment requirements.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems combines Computer Science with the core business courses. See the CBU MIS slide show at:
