The Department of Fine Arts and Speech includes Art, Music, Theatre and Speech. The department offers a major in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Studio Art, as well as minors in Art, Music Performance and Theatre Arts. Art courses are offered in two and three-dimensional studio format, as well as a survey lecture class in art history. Drawing, painting and printmaking acquaint students with a variety of techniques using dry media and liquid media. Students desiring an art minor will complete a total of eighteen hours, the final three hours being the preparation for an exhibit in the CBU Art Gallery. Students desiring a major in Art will complete a total of 121 hours, culminating in a Senior Exhibition. Creativity and intuitive thinking are sharpened while students acquire technical skills. Students participate in projects that use their talents in performing community service.
Music courses include Private Voice Instruction, Private Piano Instruction, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, CB Singers, and World Music. These classes are open to all students; however, Private Voice Instruction, Private Piano Instruction, and CB Singers require auditions. Whether students have had previous music instruction or not they can find some course in music to fit their needs. Every semester students perform in the CBU Concert Series. Recitals and concerts are presented on campus as well as in many venues in the Memphis area. The CB Singers perform several concerts each semester. Most recently they performed Handel's Messiah, with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Other works have included The Requiem by John Rutter, The Christmas Cantata by Daniel Pinkham and Requiem by Gabriel Faure.
Courses in Theatre include Production, Introduction to Theatre, Acting, History of the Theatre and Oral Interpretation of Literature. Students can participate in several theatrical productions each year. Recent productions include Spoon River Anthologies by Edgar Lee Masters, Is There a Comic in the House? by Billy St. John, and Fools by Neil Simon. The CBU Drama Club, Encore, is very active on campus. The club is dedicated to supporting theatre at CBU and theatre and drama in general.
Introduction to Speech is available to students across campus and is required for majors in Business and Arts. Through the study of speech, students are able to cultivate their personal talents and facilitate public performances and career opportunities in their respective disciplines.
