John Smarrelli Jr., Ph.D.

John Smarrelli Jr. is a native of Syracuse, NY, and comes to CBU from Syracuse's Le Moyne College where he served as special assistant to the president, as interim president from 2007-2008, and as provost. Prior to his work at Le Moyne, he was dean of the College of Arts and Science at Loyola University in Chicago.
He earned his doctorate and master's degrees from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, a bachelor's degree from Le Moyne College, and has conducted postdoctoral work in biology at the University of Virginia. Over the years in his role as professor of biology, Dr. Smarrelli has published numerous articles and authored textbooks as well as multiple College Board publications.
Before coming to Memphis and CBU, Dr. Smarrelli was an active member of the Syracuse community and served on numerous boards, including the Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Development, Syracuse 20/20, Salvation Army, Museum of Science and Technology, and CNY Alzheimer’s Association. He served as Vice Chair of CNY Biotechnology Research Center and was selected to serve on the County Executive’s transition team.
An active member of the Catholic community, Dr Smarrelli was a lector and Eucharistic minister at Holy Cross Parish in DeWitt, NY.
John and his wife, Eloise, have three children, Kristina (age 32), Nicholas (age 26), and Elizabeth (age 21).
Dr. John Smarrelli is the 22nd president of Christian Brothers University and the University’s first permanent lay president.
