CBU Scratching the Videogame Itch
Memphis- Christian Brothers University (CBU) is inviting students in grades 6-8 to create their own videogame Tuesday, October 30 or Wednesday, November 14, from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. in Nolan Engineering Building, Room 237. The Engineering department is using the Scratch program, a new graphical programming language invented at MIT, to allow students to create their own interactive game.
"CBU School of Engineering is offering these workshops on a cutting edge educational tool developed at MIT," noted, Dr. Juan Carlos Olabe-Basogain, professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, "Already students in the CBU Education Masters program have been introduced to Scratch, a new software building block system designed to help students learn social sciences, geography, math and other subjects."
In addition to the workshops, Dr. Olabe-Basogain and other CBU faculty have developed a website learnscratch.org designed to help teachers learn to use Scratch in the classroom for grades 1-12. This innovative site continues tutorials lesson plans, demo and other tools to help primary and secondary teachers. Mitch Resnick, Director Scratch Team at the MIT Media Lab recently acknowledged the efforts of CBU, "We really appreciate your efforts to provide online materials about Scratch. I am sure many people in the Scratch community will benefit."
Workshops include a general description of engineering, an introduction to Scratch, videogame design, a judging and closing. The workshops are free and open to all students in grades 6-8.
