Memphis--- The Honors Leadership class at Christian Brothers University (CBU), taught by Dr. Kristin Prien, Associate Professor, kicked off an on-campus recycling program Friday, November 16 and collected cans to benefit to the Humane Society's "Pet Waggin".
Cans were collected in 20 green/teal bins around campus. In addition, the class handed out bags for students to keep in their rooms to collect cans and then bring them to the bins. Held in the Buckman Quad, students gathered around to collect the cans, play games, and play with animals brought to campus from the Humane Society.
"This was a student-led, student managed project, from start to finish", noted Dr. Prien. "All of the class members assumed leadership roles at one point or another. For future employers of today's students, this project is a wonderful example of students learning to function in a work setting and enhancing their leadership skills. The project was a team effort and organic in nature, rather than formal and hierarchical."
While the students definitely enjoyed the cool Friday afternoon in the sun during lunch at the collection, they were contributing to a larger cause. "A pound of aluminum cans, which consists of only 33 cans, will purchase two pounds of dog food. By collecting these discarded cans, we are not only helping the environment but also supplementing the Human Society's pet food budget. We are extremely appreciative of the CBU students' effort to initiate this project," stated Ginger Morgan, president of the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County. The goal of the project was to collect as many cans as possible and to help the Humane Society supplement its pet food budget, as well as, make CBU a cleaner, greener campus. ###
