CBU GARDEN SHRINE GIVEN IN MEMORY OF DR. RICHARD DEUTSCH

Memphis—On April 3, a warm sunny day with a gentle breeze blowing, the Blessing and Dedication of the Garden Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary was held at Christian Brothers University (CBU). The Shrine given by the Deutsch family in memory of Dr. Richard Deutsch, a devoted professor of 18 years in the Business Administration Division, provides a serene setting for contemplation.

Throughout his life, Dr. Deutsch had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1958, when his son, Henry, and he returned to their homeland, Vienna, Austria, one of the first stops was to pay tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mr. Deutsch showed his son a faded, tattered photo that he had kept since their departure from Austria in 1938 when he asked the Blessed Virgin Mary to protect and guide him during this venture to a new home in the United States.

Dr. Deutsch was a pillar of strength while on faculty at CBU. His students, such as Leo Arnoult who shared his memories of Dr. Deutsch at the Dedication, characterized him as a father figure, exacting in performance, always instructing, advising, guiding, aiming at excellence in work, and adhering to strong ethical principles. Both his son, Henry and grandson, Michael, spoke of his staunch support of CBU, strong moral character, love of music, and caring nature. Father Valentine Handwerker, Pastor at Immaculate Conception Cathedral, performed the blessing and Dr. Mary Ogilvie , CBU biology professor, provided music for the occasion.

The CBU Garden Shrine was designed by local landscape artist, Chris Petit, who incorporated Dr. Deutsch’s love for the outdoors. The design centers around the Blessed Virgin Mary statute donated to CBU by the class of 1944 and a beautiful water feature.

Brother Vincent Malham, CBU President and close friend of family, expressed his gratitude and appreciation of this beautiful memorial as it will provides a prayful place for meditation to be enjoyed by all who visit the CBU campus. Dr. Deutsch’s spirit and love of nature will always be felt by those who pause a moment at the Garden Shrine. ###
